Description
Color: Black; fins grayish.

Body elongate, compressed. Head 4.3, depth of body about 7.5, both in standard length. Snout a little more than one third of head. Interorbital space slightly less than snout. Eye diameter very small. Cleft of mouth wide; maxillary reaching greatly beyond eye. Dorsal fin origin half length of snout behind a level from ventral fin base and nearer to the tip of snout than to the base of caudal fin. Anal fin origin immediately behind vertical through the last dorsal ray. Adipose fin midway between dorsal fin and base of caudal fin. The two uppermost pectoral fin rays are intimately attached in their basal part and reaching behind adipose fin; other pectoral fin rays which are slender and rigid reaching at least to vent. Outermost two rays of ventral fins reaching at least to a vertical from adipose fin. Caudal fin deeply forked, two or three lowermost rays prolonged, their length at least one third of rest of body. The body and head, except the snout and jaws are covered with thin deciduous cycloid scales.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 12-13; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 8-10; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 2+12-13; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: 8-9; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 48-51; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 13.
