Description
Size: 18 - 20 cm.

Color: The initial phase is olivaceous to brownish yellow dorsally, white ventrally, with a black zigzag stripe running from eye to upper caudal peduncle (continuing anteriorly as a yellow stripe from the eye to the snout). This primary phase is similar to Halichoeres trimaculatus except for the black zigzag stripe along its back. The terminal phase is green, the zigzag stripe lavender-pink with its anterior portion overlaid by a black blotch.

Head 2.9-3.3 in standard length, 3.6-4.0 in total length. Depth of body 3.1-3.4 in standard length, 3.7-4.1 in total length. Snout 2.5-2.8 in head. Eye diameter 2.2-2.6 in snout and 1.3-1.5 in convex interorbital space. Two pairs of canines in the upper jaw, the anterior pair longer and forwardly directed, the other pair curved outwards and backwards. Two canines in the lower jaw directed forwards. A canine at corner of mouth. Pectoral fin shorter than head without snout. Ventral fin with the first ray produced, exceeding the length of head without snout. Mouth horizontal, maxillary nearly reaching to below anterior nostril. Lips rather thick, plated, the inner plate crenulated. A group of about 9 small scales, in 3 longitudinal rows, on upper part of opercle. About 10 rows of elongate scales before dorsal, smaller than those of the rest of the body, excepting those of the thorax, which are also smaller. Scales beginning on head above hind border of eye. Dorsal spines stiff and pungent, the first scarcely longer than eye, the last nearly twice eye. Soft dorsal pointed, somewhat higher than spinous part, the longest ray more than twice eye. First anal spine very small, third longest, not quite one eye diameter and a half. Soft anal somewhat less deep than soft dorsal, pointed behind. Pectorals as long as head without snout or somewhat shorter. Ventrals with the first ray much produced, about half diameter of eye longer than pectorals. Caudal slightly rounded.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: IX, 11; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 11; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 12; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 27-28; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 3+1+8-9.
Usually solitary and aggressive towards members of its own species.

Protogynous, external fertilization, nonguarders. Pelagic spawner.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
