Size: 38-280 mm

Color: Color: Yellowish with several dark brown bands as wide as or wider than interspaces. Bands appear as irregular patches in the young. Dorsal with dark edge and with large blotches below. Anal with blackish blotches. Caudal with several blackish blotches. Pectoral yellowish with a dark blotch at base.

Head 3.0-3.5 in standard length, 3.7-4.5 in total length. Depth of body 2.7-3.1 in standard length, 3.4-4.1 in total length. Eye diameter 3-4 in head, 1.1-1.2 in snout and equal to or a little more than interorbital space. Maxilla reaching to below front border of eye. Hind border of preopercle serrated. Pectoral fin as long as head without snout, subequal to ventral fin.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 17-18; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 7; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 15-16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 80-84; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 17+1+27-29; gill raker count: 10+1+20-24.
