Size: 30 cm.

Color: Silvery, the dorsal with a narrow black margin, in young with indistinct dark transverse, vertical bands.

Oblong, height 3 to 3.4 in length, about equal to length of head, which is pointed, with the rostro-dorsal profile ascending in a nearly straight line. with a slightly concavity above anterior part of eye. Eye 3, in young less than 3 in head, about equal to snout and naked inter orbital space. Maxillary reaching to below front border of eye, profile of mandibula nearly not concave. Preoperculum entire, its angle right, rounded. Seven pointed gillrakers on lower branch of first branchial arch. Lower pharyngeal coossified, forming a triangular plate, posteriorly deeply emarginate and peripherally covered by rather long pointed teeth, in the center granular. Dorsal originates at a distance from end of snout, much shorter than length of spinous and soft portion of dorsal together and more than one fifth longer than height of body. Second dorsal spine rather strong and elongate, in large specimens once and 1/4, in small once and 1/3 contained in length of head. Second anal spine the strongest, nearly thrice in head. Pectorals somewhat longer than head in young, increasing in size with age, reaching vertical through origin of anal. Ventrals more than half length of head. Caudal with the upper lobe somewhat longer, about equal to head. Scales between 5th dorsal fin spine base and lateral line , 4-4.5. Upper jaw extending almost to the level of anterior margin of dermal eye opening. Second dorsal fin spine longest, 19-26% fo SL (mean 23%). Caudal fin dusky (rarely with dark distal margin); lower edge of lower caudal fin hyaline. Dusky stripes absent or very indistinct along scale rows above lateral line (sometimes 4-9 slightly oblique dusky bands in specimens less than about 10 cm SL); 4-9 slightly oblique dusky bands or columns of ovoid dark spots (rarely brownish) immediately below lateral line, but more obvious in preserved or stressed live specimens.
