Description
Size: 20-23 cm.

Color: Yellow with irregular blackish bands on head, body and fins. Rarely the bands on body are reduced to irregular blotches. Small white spots, larger in small specimens, scattered on sides of body present or absent. Soft dorsal and anal with oblique, dark, more or less broken bands, similar vertical bands on caudal. Brachial part of pectorals with irregular dark marmorations, rayed part of fin with irregular bands or blotches. Ventrals with short, dark, longitudinal and transverse bands, more or less broken into spots.

Head 2.1 in standard length, 2.8 in total length. Depth of body 1.9 in standard length, about 2.6 in total length. Eye diameter about 9.0 in head, 1.3 in snout and 1.6 in interorbital space. Lower jaw projecting beyond the upper. Skin smooth. Head, body, tail and second and third dorsal spines with numerous cutaneous fringes, those at the angle of mouth and on abdomen larger. First dorsal spine slender, about half length of second, tip bulbous with two small tentacles. Last two rays of dorsal forked. First two rays of anal simple, others forked. Rays of pectoral simple.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 1+1+1+12; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 7; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 10; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: 5.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Oviparous. During courtship, the male follows the female closely then both rush to the surface to spawn. At this point, eggs are produced in a gelatinous floating mass or 'raft' and inseminated by the male. The eggs remain embedded in this raft until hatching.

Usually associated with floating objects or Sargassum.
