Size: 33-45 cm.

Color: Body is bluish in color, lower caudal rays black. In juveniles the black mid lateral band extends from tip of snout to caudal fin.

Elongate, compressed, dorsal and ventral profile evenly tapering to caudal, height of short trunk 6.33 or less in length, head 3.56 or somewhat less, conical, snout pointed twice in head and more than twice longer than eye, which goes about 5.5 in head, is situated in its middle, high up and more than 1 1/2 times shorter than flat inter orbital space measuring 3.3 in length of head. Mouth with broad, thick, fleshy lips and nearly horizontal gape, jaws equal, termination of upper jaw far distant from eye, its length thrice in head. Scales rounded, elongate on opercles and nape, square on superior part of trunk. Operculum with a strong flat spine, five to six branchiostegals. Teeth in jaws anteriorly pluriseriate, the outer series enlarged and more or less curved, continued in a single posterior series of conical ones, the middle ones highest, in the upper jaw terminating with a single isolated curved canine, vomer and palatines toothless. Dorsal beginning above origin of pectorals terminating near caudal, the rays about thrice lower than height of trunk, spinous part still lower, anal with the anterior rays highest, terminating below end of dorsal, caudal somewhat emarginate, with more or less pointed upper and lower tip, pectorals longer than half head, pointed, the rays of the upper third the longest, ventrals about twice length of eye, acute, the short spine osseous. Dorsal spines (total): 3-4, Dorsal soft rays (total): 43-47, Anal spines: 1, Anal soft rays: 37-40.

Dioecious with external fertilization.
