Size: 35.0 cm TL

Color: Brown; chest and abdomen darker.

Elongate, compressed, tapering to the tail. Head 4.2, depth of body 4.7, both in standard length. Eye small, its diameter much less than length of somewhat rounded snout. Mouth wide; maxilla reaching slightly beyond hind border of eye. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws, vomer and palatines. Operculum with one strong spine above. Gill membranes free from isthmus. Gill rakers long. Dorsal and anal fins more or less confluent with caudal fin. Origin of dorsal fin in vertical through base of pectoral fin. Origin of ventral fin about one head length behind head. Ventral fin inserted just behind symphysis of cleithra. Ventral fin shorter than snout and eye together. Scales small, deciduous.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 95-100; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 85-88; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 28; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Oviparous, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass.
