Size: Max length 30.0 cm SL (male/unsexed); common length 20.0 cm TL (male/unsexed).

Color: Brownish, becoming lighter below; operculum darker. Dorsal brownish, anterior six soft rays blackish distally. Anal brownish, edges of rays lighter. Caudal brownish. Pectoral light brownish. Ventral pale, first four rays slightly brownish submarginally.

Moderately oblong, compressed. Head 2.7, depth of body about 2.8, both in standard length. Eye diameter 3.6 in head, about 0.6 in snout and 0.7 in interorbital space. Maxillary extending behind vertical from the hind border of eye. Length of chin barbels slightly more than postorbital length of head plus half eye diameter. Dorsal and anal fins comparatively long. Length of pectoral fin more than postorbital part of head. Ventral fin 1.3 times eye diameter. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws and on vomer and palatines.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: V, 33; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: IV, 14; number of rays in the pectoral fin: i, 14; number of spines and rays in the ventral fins: i, 6; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 35; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 8+1+16; gill raker count: 14.
