Description
Size: 10-40 cm.

Color: Brownish to grayish white; semitransparent appearance.

Body elongate, slender, soft and gelatinous in appearance. It is reported to be phosphorescent in fresh condition. Large head, small eyes. Cleft of the mouth wide and deep. Lower jaw prominent. Band of unequal, recurved, depressible teeth in the jaws, specially enlarged and hastate in the lower jaw. Dorsal fin situated midway between the snout and root of the caudal. Caudal trilobed. Scales commence opposite the origin of the dorsal fin; restricted to posterior half of the body. Lateral fin tubules phosphorescent. Posterior tip of pectoral fin reaching origin of pelvic fin. Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11 - 13; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 13 - 15.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders of eggs, open water/substratum egg scatterers.
