Size: 37-70 mm.

Color: Greyish brown with three or four transverse yellowish bands along sides. The first band at the hind border of operculum, the second below 5th-6th dorsal spines to before anal fin, the third from base of anterior dorsal rays to the base of median rays of anal and the fourth on caudal peduncle. Dorsal and anal brown. A dark blotch at base of the posterior rays of dorsal. Ventral brown. Caudal dusky brown basally and distally, creamy in the middle. Pectoral pale.

Head 3.3-3.5 in standard length, 4.2-4.6 in total length. Depth of body 2.4-2.7 in standard length, 3.0-3.4 in total length. Mouth somewhat oblique. Maxillary reaching to below front border of eye. Eye diameter 3.0-3.3 in head, more than snout and interorbital space. Two rows of teeth in jaws. Preorbital and suborbital naked. Three rows of scales on preopercle, flange naked. Pectoral fin shorter than head. Ventral fin as long as length of head. Scales on upper part of head covering interorbital space but not reaching to nostrils. Dorsal spines increasing in length to the fourth, which is subequal to the following and as long as snout and eye together. Membranes between the spines incised. 1 1/2 to 2 scales between lateral line and scaly sheath of dorsal below the last spine. Soft dorsal slightly pointed, the longest rays equal to head without snout. First anal spine less than half length of second, which is as long as longest dorsal spines. Anal rounded, the longest rays equal to head without snout. Caudal emarginate.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 12-13; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 11-12; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 15-16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 18-19+8-9; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+9.
