Description
Size: 25-50 cm.

Color: Back and upper sides brown, lower sides and belly white; 4 to 7 dark dots on upper edge of caudal fin; a series of fairly distinct dark blotches along lateral line (less distinct in specimens from colder waters); stomach black; liver striped black and white.

Body elongate, cylindrical, with lizard-like head and adipose fin. 2 rows of teeth on anterior part of outer palatine tooth bands. Pectoral fins moderately long, reaching to level of pelvic fin base; pelvic fin rays almost equal in length. Dorsal spines (total): 0-0, Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12, Anal spines: 0, Anal soft rays: 11-12.
Feeds on fishes (anchovy and red mullet), crustaceans, and other invertebrates

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water or substratum egg scatterers.

Max. age: 7-8 years.
