Size: 27-35 cm.

Color: Head, body and fins orange-yellow. Pale blue ocelli with darker blue margins on head, thorax and sides. Spots about pinhead size, larger and more crowded on head, sometimes smaller on sides. Ocelli may extend onto bases of dorsal and anal fins, and on bases of outer rays of caudal fin. Very small juveniles (up to 50 mm SL) may have vertical blue lines on side, fragmenting into the ocelli with increase in size. Orbit with a diffused-edged dark, triangular smudge. Orange-brown iris.

Height 2-2.2, 2.6-2.9 in length with caudal. Head 3.3-3.6, 4.2-4.8 in length with caudal. Eye 3.3-3.8, 1.8-2 in snout and 1-1.3 in somewhat convex inter orbital space. Upper and lower profile of head before eyes concave. First dorsal spine equal to eye, sixth or seventh spines longest, about as long as snout and half eye, last spine equal to snout or somewhat shorter. Soft dorsal pointed, median rays longest, equal to snout and half eye. First anal spine more than eye, third or fourth spines longest, equal to snout or somewhat longer. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal. Pectorals equal to snout and eye or somewhat longer, ventrals equal to snout and half eye. Caudal deeply forked, the lobes pointed. Caudal peduncle about as long as deep, its least depth equal to eye or four fifths of eye. Fin spines stout, pungent and venomous. Midline of thorax and ridges fully scaled. Dorsal spines (total): 13 - 13, Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 10, Anal spines: 7, Anal soft rays: 9, Vertebrae: 13.
