Size: 11.5-12 cm. TL

Color: Males are identified by the angled or diagonal pink band below the eye. Females have a brighter pink patch of color on the belly compared to the similar Halichoeres margaritaceus.

Height 3.1-3.4, 3.7-4 in length with caudal. Head 3-3.1, 3.5-3.7 in length with caudal. Height of head 1.3 in its length. Eye 4-6, 1.4-2 in snout and 1-1.4 in almost flat interorbital space. Mouth nearly horizontal, more than half diameter of eye below level of lower border of eye. Maxillary reaching to below anterior nostril. Lips plated, the inner plate crenulated. Teeth pointed, the four anterior ones in the upper jaw canines, the inner pair longest, somewhat curved, directed forwards, the outer pair shorter, curved backwards. Two canines anteriorly in the lower jaw. A canine at corner of mouth. Head naked, excepting above, where the scales begin above or slightly behind hind margin of eye. About 9 rows of scales before dorsal, these scales much smaller than those of the body. Similar small scales on thorax between isthmus and base of ventrals. Dorsal spines stiff and pungent, first about equal to eye, last spine equal to snout. Longest soft dorsal rays somewhat longer. Dorsal pointed behind. First anal spine minute, third longest, equal to snout or somewhat shorter. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal. Pectorals and ventrals subequal, as long as head without snout or somewhat shorter. Caudal truncate. Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 11.
