Description
Max. size: 50.0 cm TL

Color: Ground color of the fish is blackish-brown, with a dark stripe running from the mouth to the pectoral fin base. The posterior margin of the caudal fin is whitish.

It is an attractive species with a deep and laterally compressed body. Head 3.3-3.5 in standard length, 4.7-4.9 in total length. Depth of body 2.1-2.2 in standard length, 3.0-3.2 in total length. Upper profile of head slightly convex, chin prominent. Eye diameter 4.9-5.2 in head, 3.3-3.5 in snout and 1.5-1.8 in convex interorbital space. Teeth red, on on each side of the symphisial pair in upper jaw fang-like. The cheeks are scaly. Scales above the pectoral fin base and just behind the gill slit are enlarged to form a flexible tympanum while the scales of the posterior half of the body have low keels forming longitudinal ridges. There is a prominent groove in the skin that extends anteriorly from the eye. The small terminal mouth bears two fang-like teeth in the upper jaw. There are two dorsal fins. The first dorsal has 3 spines with the first two spines long and forming the typical trigger mechanism. The second dorsal fin has 32 to 36 rays. The anal fin has 28 to 31 rays. Usually forms aggregations and feeds on zooplankton as well as on sponges.

Dioecious, external fertilization, guarders, nesters. Distinct pairing.
