Size: 34-75 mm

Color: Brown above, light brown below. Sides of body with 6-7 narrow silvery vertical bars interspaced with wider dusky bars. A dark brown triangular mark from lower border of eye to angle or slightly above angle of preopercle ridge, its width much more below the eye than at the angle of preopercular ridge. A brownish saddle on upper part of peduncle at caudal base. Outer portion of first dorsal blackish; soft dorsal, anal and caudal pale to slightly dusky; caudal lobes often with dark intramarginal streak; ventral slightly dusky to colorless.

Head 2.5-2.7 in standard length, 3.2-3.4 in total length. Depth of body 2.4-2.7 in standard length, 3.1-3.4 in total length. Eye diameter 2.4-2.6 in head, 0.5 in snout and 0.7 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching to below or slightly below hind border of pupil. Teeth villiform, in bands in jaws and in a single row on palatines and in an indistinct double row on vomer. Preopercle ridge smooth; preopercle margin finely serrated. Pectoral fin slightly longer than ventrals, equal to postorbital part of head and ½ eye diameter. First dorsal fin spine about 1/3 of second, the latter being half as long as third.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VII; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: I, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 24-25; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+6.
