Max. size: 12.0 cm TL

Color: Bluish green with three longitudinal yellowish bands on snout and yellowish round blotches on sides. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins clear; caudal with a dark vertical bar posteriorly on median rays.

Head 2.7-2.9 in standard length, 3.2-3.4 in total length. Depth of body 2.7-2.8 in standard length, 3.2-3.3 in total length. Eye diameter 4.4-4.7 in head, 2.9-3.3 in snout and 1.1-1.2 in convex interorbital space. Elongate and compressed, snout long, mouth dorsal. First dorsal spine above middle of eye, fully erectile, with barbs directed upwards on its anterior side and directed downwards on its posterior side, length of spine less than 3/5 of head. Second dorsal spine inconspicuous. Pectoral fin equal to 1ΒΌ of eye diameter. Ventral spine covered with spinules. Caudal fin slightly rounded. Caudal peduncle short, 2.1-2.3 in its depth. Scales very small, with backwardly directed spinules.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: II; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: 31-32; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 29-30; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 11.

Monogamous. Dioecious with external fertilization. Aggression is used commonly in courtship. Spawning commences when after swimming together in different tufts, the female concentrates on just one and begins to thrust repeatedly and pause. The male follows suit nuzzling the female. The female then drops into the algae and spawns, while the male releases the sperm beside her. The pair then swims back to their territory.
