Max. size: 15.0 cm TL (male or unsexed), 7 cm TL (female).

Color: Light reddish brown above and lighter below. A silvery band edged by dark above from snout, along lower border of eye to upper part of opercle. Five or six light silvery bands on lower half of sides formed by silvery dots on scales from thorax to above end of anal fin. Scales on lower part with dark spots. A brown spot at base of supra-median caudal rays and sometimes another on last rays of dorsal. Young specimens often with a brown spot at base of last anal rays.

Head 2.8-3.0 in standard length, 3.4-3.7 in total length. Depth of body 3.4-3.6 in standard length, 4.1-4.4 in total length. Snout 3 in head. Eye diameter 1.7-2.0 in snout and 1.2-1.4 in interorbital space. Pectoral fin as long as or slightly less than head without snout. Mouth horizontal, moderate. Maxillary not reaching to below anterior nostril. Teeth incisiviform. A moderate canine at corner of mouth. Head naked, excepting above, where the scales begin slightly behind vertical through hind border of eye. About 9-10 rows of scales before dorsal, these scales much smaller than those of sides. Scales of thorax somewhat large than those of sides. Dorsal spine stiff and pungent, first somewhat less, last spine somewhat more than eye. Soft dorsal slightly higher than spinous part. First anal spine minute, third longest, equal to eye. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal. Caudal rounded. Pectorals as long as head without snout. Ventrals somewhat more than length of snout.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: IX, 11; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 11; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 13; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 27-28; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+9.
