Size: 81-187 mm

Color: Top of head and back brownish to bluish grey becoming silvery white with yellowish tinge on lower sides; tip of snout, tip of lower jaw and dorsal edge of operculum dark. Spinous dorsal slightly dusky anteriorly; caudal pale, outer rays slightly dusky; anal, pectoral and pelvic fins pale.

Head 3.1-3.3 in standard length, 3.7-4.0 in total length. Depth of body 3.6-3.9 in standard length, 4.4-4.7 in total length. Eye with broad posterior and anterior adipose lid, its diameter 3.2-3.5 in head, equal to or slightly more than pointed snout and 0.7-0.8 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching to below anterior third of eye. A single series of fine teeth in the jaws, teeth present on vomer, palatines and tongue. Lateral line with very low arch anteriorly, the curved portion as long as the straight portion, keeled scutes 34-38 beginning below middle of soft dorsal. Third and fourth dorsal fin spines longest, less than half length of head. Pectoral fin about half length of snout shorter than head.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VIII; number of spines in the second dorsal fin: I, 25-27; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, I, 21-23; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 19-20; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 84-90; gill raker count: 8-10+1+27-28.
