Size: 44-78 mm

Color: Plain orange.

Head 3.8-4.2 in standard length, 4.3-4.7 in total length. Depth of body 4.6-4.9 in standard length, 5.2-5.6 in total length. Eye diameter about 7.8-8.0 in head, 1.8-2.0 in snout and about 1.7-2.0 in interorbital space. Pectoral fin equal to postorbital length of head. Ventral with a single ray, shorter than head by half length of snout. Upper jaw twice in head. Body posteriorly compressed. Dorsal fin origin about 2 eye diameter behind head. Dorsal and anal fins extending to base of caudal fin. Scales minute, cycloid. Snout and chin finely papillate. Minute teeth in rows in jaws and in narrow band on vomer and palatines. Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 90-92; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 67-68; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 22.

Dioecious, internal (oviduct) fertilization, internal live bearers. Ovoviviparous. Sexes can be readily distinguished by the male's intromittent organ and the female's genital pore. On the basis of this morphology, copulation may involve flexion of the male's body and pumping of sperm into the female. Embryos are retained in the ovaries until about 6 mm long, deriving nourishment from large yolk sacs, making the species ovoviviparous rather than viviparous.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
