Size: 85-295 mm

Color: Brown to dark bluish brown with round to oblong gray spots on head, body and tail. Fins brown to dark brown. Gray spots present on dorsal and anal in juvenile specimens.

Head 3.0-3.3 in standard length, 3.5-4.0 in total length. Depth of body 2.1-2.6 in standard length, 2.5-3.1 in total length. Eye diameter 4.3-5.1 in head, 2.5-3.0 in snout and 1.6-1.9 in highly convex interorbital space. A deep groove in front of eye. Anterior side of first dorsal spine covered with spinules, its length more or less than half length of head; second spine more or less than half of first spine; third spine more than half of second spine. Anterior rays of dorsal and anal elevated, as long as snout and eye together, rays becoming shorter posteriorly. Pectoral fin equal to or a little more than 2/5 of head. Ventral spine immovable, short and with spinules. Caudal fin rounded in young; lobes produced in large specimens. Scales on head and body rough, each with a short spine in juveniles or with a median ridge in large specimens.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: III; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: ii, 23-24; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: i, 21-22; number of rays in the pectoral fin: i, 13-14; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 42-44+6-7; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 29-32.
