Size: 30-53 mm

Color: Head and body pale yellow with brownish tinge above. A horizontal dark brown stripe from snout through eye and operculum tapering posteriorly on caudal peduncle. A blackish brown spot at base of caudal, most of the spot above lateral line. Membrane between anterior three or four spines of first dorsal dark, remainder of the fin lighter. Second dorsal and anal lighter with a narrow sub-basal dusky stripe. Upper and lower border of caudal dark. Membrane between outer rays of ventral dusky.

Head 2.5-2.7 in standard length, 3.3-3.5 in total length. Depth of body 3.1-3.3 in standard length, 4.0-4.2 in total length. Eye diameter 3.0-3.3 in head, 0.7-0.8 in snout and 0.7 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching to below or slightly behind middle of eye. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws and a narrow band on vomer and on palatines. Preopercle ridge with strong denticulations, margin serrate. Suborbital strongly serrate. Pectoral fin longer than snout and eye together; ventral shorter.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VII; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: I, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 12; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 25-26; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+6.
