Size: Maximum 20 cm; common 10 to 15 cm.

Color: Steel blue on back, sides and belly silvery, a narrow golden bar mid-laterally from opercle to caudal, fin hyaline, caudal edged black, dark spot on base of first ray of dorsal and anal. First ray of dorsal and pectorals with a dark spot.

Body is elongate and rounded. Abdominal profile more convex than the dorsal profile. Snout acute. Scutes on ventral edge absent. Teeth minute on jaws, palatines and pterygoids and not on vomer. Paired fins small. Branchiostegal rays fewer (12 to 15) and posterior part of scales marked with numerous tiny radiating striae. W-shaped pelvic scute; isthmus tapering evenly forward; more anal fin rays. Maxillary not reaching below front margin of eye. Jaws equal. Origin of dorsal more than diameter of eye nearer to caudal than to snout. Origin of anal far behind dorsal, about as long as postorbital part of head, shorter than ventrals, the origin of which is below the middle of the dorsal. Pectorals pointed, as long head without snout. Caudal deeply incised, about 4 times in length. Distinct teeth on jaws, palatines, pterygoids and tongue. Gillrakers about 20, with very fine spines along the innerside, as long as pupil, slightly longer than branchial filaments. Scales thin, very deciduous, longitudinally striated, their hind margin rough or indistinctly crenulated. Elongated scales in the axil of pectorals and ventrals. Dorsal spines (total): 0; anal spines: 0; anal soft rays: 14 - 18.
