Size: 13-29 cm disc width

Color: Yellowish to reddish brown, rather pale marginally on disc; cutaneous folds of tail dusky brown.

Disc subquadrangular, as long as wide. Spiracles much larger than eyes. Mouth undulated; no buccal papillae on floor of mouth. Tail whip-like, with upper and lower cutaneous folds and one serrated spine. Skin smooth in young; in adults an incomplete median series of tubercles, in very large specimens a complete median series of tubercles; tail roughened with tubercles.

Dioecious, internal (oviduct) fertilization, internal live bearers. Exhibit ovoviparity (aplacental viviparity), with embryos feeding initially on yolk, then receiving additional nourishment from the mother by indirect absorption of uterine fluid enriched with mucus, fat or protein through specialized structures. Distinct pairing with embrace. Gives birth to litters of 1-4 pups; born at 7-10 cm WD. No reproductive synchronicity.
