Description
Size: Maximum 35 cm; common to 10 cm

Color: Yellow brown and patterned with distinct irregular dark brown blotches often forming irregular cross bands on the eyed side. Some dorsal and anal rays are dashed with dark brown. The blind side is whitish.

Height 3-3.5, 3.4-3.8 in length with caudal. Head 4.3-5, 4.8-5.4 in length with caudal. Eyes 8-10, less than one eyediameter apart, the upper one somewhat in advance of the lower one. Posterior nostril on colored side pierced through interorbital space, anterior one tubular, near upper lip. Corner of mouth below middle or hindborder of lower eye, less than one eyediameter nearer to end of snout than to branchial opening. Scales ctenoid on both sides. An upper and a median lateral line on colored side, separated by 15-18 scales. A single indistinct one on blind side.
The tongue sole has a flat and rather elongate body with a rounded snout. The eyes occur on the left side of the body with only a narrow space between them. The rostral hook is short. There are two lateral lines on the eyed side but none on the blind side. Ctenoid scales cover the body on both sides. The dorsal and anal fins are confluent with the caudal fin and the dorsal fin has 90-100 rays, the anal fin 72-78, rays and the caudal fin 10 rays.
