Description
Size: 55-65 cm; Length 55-66 cm.

Color: white or blackish with white chin; two long narrow plumes on occiput, scapular aigrettes and long lanceolate feathers on breast. Immature dark morph lighter grey than adult. Bare parts: iris pale yellow; facial skin yellow; bill heavy and deep and appears to droop, yellow, pinkish brown, horn brown, or brownish olive; feet and legs olive brown or dark olive in white morph, dark brown or brownish olive in dark morph.

Voice: Usually silent.

Habits: Solitary and crepuscular, sits by hunching, runs around for hunting and stalks its prey, breeds in colonies along the western coast.

Adult: Like littel Egret, but dimorphic has two color phases, viz., pure white and slaty-grey. The latter may vary up to slaty-blue-black. Throat and upper foreneck glistening white in slaty-grey phase, sexes alike in both color phases. Breeding birds develop two elongated narrow plumes on hind crest (nuchal crest), and same sort of plumes on back and breast. Juvenile: Pale ashy-grey above and white below except grey upper foreneck.

Nesting: Season- March to July, varying with locality. Nest- a twig platform like that of other egrets, commonly built in colonies on mangrove trees in a tidal swamp, or in a large peepul or jambul, often in association with other egrets, paddy birds, etc. Eggs- 3 or 4, pale sea-green or blue-green, unmarked.
