Size: 45-50 cm.

Color: Coloration varied, capable of changing its color. Spots or blotches on body form reticulations and cross bands; paler ventrally.

Height 8.3-9.3, 9.1-10 in length with caudal. Head 5.8-6.8, 6.4-7.3 in length with caudal. Eye 4.4-5.4, 1.3-1.7 in snout. Inter orbital space convex, a little more than half diameter of eye. Mouth somewhat oblique. Maxillary reaching to below hind border of eye or nearly so. A single row of pointed teeth in the jaws, none on the palate. Posterior nostril much larger than anterior one, closely before eye, both nostrils with a low rim. Opercle with a single spine. Origin of dorsal above tip of pectorals. Dorsal rays slightly increasing in height posteriorly, the longest about equal to snout and eye. Origin of anal twice nearer tip of snout than tip of caudal. Anal somewhat less than dorsal. Pectorals scarcely longer than snout. Caudal pointed. Gill membranes ventrally free from the isthmus. Posterior otic sensory canal pore present. Cephalic sensory canal pores not pigmented. Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 68 - 74; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 57 - 66; Vertebrae: 74 - 84.

Reproductive activity appears to be cyclical and the species may not be a protogynous hermaphrodite.
