Description
Size: 18.0 cm TL (male)

Color: Brownish overall. A black head band is posteriorly bordered by a white band running across the opercle and anteriorly by a narrow white stripe. A dark band divides the caudal fin between an orange to red inner portion and a hyaline outer portion. The edge of the caudal fin is whitish.

The body is compressed and disc-shaped with the snout slightly protruding. Head 3 in standard length, 3.6 in total length. Depth of body 1.45 in standard length, 1.75 in total length. Eyes are large. Eye diameter 3 in head, equal to snout and also interorbital space. Gape of mouth slightly below a level from lower border of eye. The well developed fins include a dorsal with 12 spines and 25-28 rays, an anal with 3 spines and 20-22 soft rays, pectorals with 14-15 rays and a truncate caudal. Body is covered with ctenoid scales. Pectoral fin shorter than head; ventral fin slightly shorter than pectoral. Base of spinous dorsal fin about equal to base of soft dorsal fin. Fifth dorsal fin spine longest, posterior spines slightly shorter. Second anal fin spine stronger and slightly longer than the third. Lateral line running straight to below 9th or 10th dorsal spine and curving downwards posteriorly.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XII, 26; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 22; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 32; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 8+16.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Distinct pairing.
