Color: Dusky grey or bluish green above and silvery white below. A black spot is present on operculum. The soft dorsal and anal fins are dusky with white tipped lobes and the caudal fin is dusky with a yellow tinge.

Compressed body with upper and lower profiles about are equal. The body of the fish, including the breast is covered with minute scales. Head 3.1-3.4 in standard length, 4.0-4.3 in total length. Depth of body 2.6-3.6 in standard length, 3.3-4.5 in total length. Dorsal profile of head strongly arched. Eye with a posterior adipose lid, eye diameter 3.8-5.2 in head, equal to or shorter than snout and about 1.1-1.3 in convex interorbital space. Maxillary reaching to below posterior third of eye in juveniles and to below hind border of eye in large adults. Teeth in upper jaw in a band with the outer row enlarged; single series of teeth in lower jaw; teeth present on vomer, palatines and tongue. Anterior part of lateral line arched, 1/3 –1/4 shorter than straight part having 30-33 scutes and beginning below 5th to 8th dorsal ray. Breast completely scaly. Pectoral fin falcate, lightly longer than head. Anterior lobe of soft dorsal fin longer than half length of head; anterior lobe of anal fin slightly shorter.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VII-VIII; number of spines in the second dorsal fin: I, 19-21; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, I, 15-17; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 18-19; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 90-95; gill raker count: 6-7+1+15-17.
