Description
Max. size: 117 cm FL.

Max. published weight: 43.5 kg.

Color: Head and body color brassy; median fins electric blue; fins of juveniles and the young pale to dusky, except yellow pectorals.

Head 3.1-3.4 in standard length, 3.7-4.2 in total length. Depth of body 2.9-3.1 in standard length, 3.5-3.8 in total length. Eye with a broad posterior adipose lid, 5.6-6.0 in head, 1.7-1.9 in snout and about 1.6 in highly convex interorbital space. Maxillary reaching about middle of eye. Teeth in a villiform band in upper jaw, the outer row enlarged; a single row of teeth in lower jaw; vomer, palatines and tongue with teeth. Anterior rays of soft dorsal fin and anal fin elongate, somewhat falcate. Pectoral fin falciform, much longer than length of head. Lateral line arched anteriorly, becoming straight below about 4th dorsal ray and the arched portion about 1/5 shorter than the straight part with 36-38 scutes. Chest entirely scaled.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VIII; number of spines in the second dorsal fin: I, 22-23; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, I, 18-19; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 19; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 92-97; gill raker count: 7-8+1+17+19.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders of eggs, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Sexual maturity is attained at 22 cm length, and spawning is about October-November along the south-western coast of India.

Often toxic when it reaches a length of more than 50 cm.
