Color: A dark spot on shoulder, otherwise flanks silvery.

Body depth increasing with size of fish, 40 to 70 % standard length in fishes over 10 cm. Belly is rounded having 16 pre-pelvic and 10 post-pelvic scutes. Mouth is inferior with thin, straight and tapering maxillae. Second supra-maxilla a mere splint. 65 gill rakers are present on first arch. Longest gill rakers on lower part of arch less than corresponding gill filaments. Hind edges of scales toothed, the teeth thinner than the gaps between them, a median series of pre-dorsal scales. A large black spot behind gill opening. Maxilla reaches a little farther than anterior border of pupil. Dorsal nearer caudal than snout, its origin much nearer to snout. Anal about as long as head without snout. Ventrals about as long as postorbital part of head, their origin below the middle of the dorsal, midway between anal and origin of pectorals, which are a little shorter than head, not reaching ventrals. Caudal scaly, 3¼-4¼ cm in length. Scales firm, their hindborder irregular or with distinct teeth. 14-16 praeventral, 11-12 postventral abdominal keeled scutes, last named with a prominent spine. About 80 short compressed gillrakers. Fins hyaline. Dorsal spines (total): 0-0, Anal spines: 0, Anal soft rays: 17-25.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders of eggs, breeds from November to February, mainly in the later part (Godavari estuary).
