Description
Color: Dull reddish purple when living, turning grayish purple when dried.

Thalli, substance firm and subcartilaginous, terete, tufted, about 5 cm high, irregularly paniculately decompound, attached by discoid holdfast. Branches subfastigiate below and more divaricate above. Epidermal cells elongated radially and distinctly palisade-like in transverse-section. Tetrasporangia situated near the apices of the ultimate branchlets, often in regular rings.
