Size: Trichomes 0.2-3.5 µm in diameter, the cells 0.2-6.0 µm long.

The end wall of mature terminal calls rounded to hemispherical, not thickened. Cross walls sometimes with one or two granules on each side; the nodes may or may not be constricted. Ex-tracellular polysaccharides invisible, or, if visible, soft and diffluent (as in the old genus Phormidium), or forming a distinct sheath (as in the old genus Lyngbya), or forming a firm, cartilaginous mass in which the trichomes are embedded.
