(Produces dangerous toxins,when in large numbers, called "red tides". They make water change color due to abundance. Produce non-fatal or fatal amounts of toxins in predators (particularly shellfish) that may be eaten by humans.

Producer of okadaic acid, dinophysistoxin – 1 (DTX1) and pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) toxins implicated in DSP.)
