Description
Size: Diameter (apical axis) 45-200 µm.

Cells are solitary or united into short chains by spines arising from the valve surface. The spines are long and, in contrast to Odontella regia and Odontella sinensis located close to the centre of the valve surface. In valve view the cells are elliptical to elliptical lanceolate. In girdle view cells are roughly rectangular with a broad girdle. The corners of the valve are drawn out into long, straight tubular processes (but usually shorter than the spines in the raised valve centre), that are directed outward and have blunt rounded tips. The tips are of a similar width throughout. Healthy cells contain numerous granular, plate-like chloroplasts. The valves are only weakly silicified and often break in permanent mounts. The valve areolation is fine with 14-16 areolae in 10 µm. The centrally positioned nucleus is also usually visible in broad girdle view.
