Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Bacillariophyceae

Size: Diameter (apical axis) 10-97 µm.

Color: Yellow brown.

This is a bipolar centric species. Cells can occur singly but are usually found, united by their spines into chains. These can be of considerable length, particularly in culture. Valves are elliptical and valve view with cone shaped processes in the corners of the valve. The connecting spines arise from the valve centre where they are slightly diverging after arising from the valve surface. Valves are coarsely areolated. 8-11 valve areolae occur in 10 µm. In empty/ cleaned valves this areolation is clearly seen with light microscopy. Healthy cells contain numerous chloroplasts which are kidney shaped or elliptical.

Reproduction is general for group: both sexual and asexual.
