Description
Size: Maximum about 40 cm total length; standard length 30 cm (from tip of upper jaw to base of caudal fin); common to 25 cm standard length.

Color: Iridescent blue, belly silvery, with lateral silvery band bordered by narrower black stripe. Dorsal and caudal fins bordered with black.

Compressed body with a short, triangular upper jaw. It is broader than long, scaleless. Teeth are arranged in 2 to 4 distinct series. Total gill rakers 33 to 46 (usually 36 to 41) on first arch. Dorsal fin has 13 to 15 soft rays while anal fin has 11 to 13 soft rays. Pectoral fins are long and it is nearly 4.5 to 5.4 times in standard length. Origin of pelvic fins twice nearer base of caudal fin than the angle of mouth. Caudal fin is deeply forked and its lower lobe is much longer than upper lobe. Predorsal scales 35 to 43, usually 37 to 41.
