Size: 280 mm.

Color: Dark brown or purple, center of scales generally darker. Tail sometimes lighter. Head without bands or with a few narrow green bands above upper lip and on chin. Fins brown or purple, dorsal, anal and caudal with a more or less distinct dark edge.

Height 2.9, 3.3-3.7 in length with caudal. Head 2.8-2.9, 3.1-3.7 in length with caudal. Height of head 1.2 in its length. Eye 4.4-5.6, 2.2 in snout and 1.7 in inter orbital space. Nostrils minute. Lips rather broad in young, narrow in adult. Teeth pink. A posterior canine may be present. Inner upper lip poorly developed. Two rows of scales on cheek, inferior preopercular limb naked. Dorsal spines sub equal, equal to distance between rictus and eye. Dorsal rays scarcely longer than spines. Anal as deep as dorsal. Pectorals half length of snout shorter than head. Ventrals about equal to post orbital part of head. Caudal somewhat rounded, the lobes slightly produced in adults.
