Color: Grey; lower part of head and chest black.

Body compressed, tail tapering. Snout depressed and somewhat acutely pointed. Head 6.5, depth of body about 11, both in total length. Eye situated high up, about 4.7 in head and 1.3 in snout. Mouth very wide, maxillary expanded behind and reaching far beyond eye. Villiform teeth in bands in jaws and a few teeth on vomer. Eight branchiostegals. Barbel absent. A strong spine at each orbital angle and two rows of recumbent spines diverging backwards. Operculum with a strong spine above; preoperculum with a double border, each with three distant spines. Gill rakers well developed, 20 in first arch. Scales small, deciduous. Lateral line indistinct. Dorsal fin origin almost above a vertical from hind border of operculum. Anal fin origin about a head length behind head. Pectoral fin equal to head without snout. Vertical simple, inserted close behind cleithra and equal to postorbital part of head.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 160+; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 140+; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I.
