Color: Numerous regularly spaced black spots on head which were apparently all white centered in life. These are a tiny dot at postero-dorsal corner of orbit, an oblique dash under eye, two tiny dots near corner of upper lip, an oblong spot on cheek below level of lower border of eye, a tiny dot above it, a large vertically oblong spot, longer than eye, on opercle, and a small round spot above it at beginning of lateral line. Head brownish with numerous tiny white punctuations on lower cheek, area under eye and lower opercle. Throat pale and unmarked except for narrowly dark edge of lower lip. Two lines of black rimmed silvery bars on side. In Female general color pale. A black spot smaller than pupil behind and on level with lower edge of eye. Lower lip narrowly dark. No other marks on head or throat.

A low crest on head of males, less than pupil in height but always present and as a flap, thinner than wide. Nasal cirrus consisting of 2 or 3 slender filaments borne palmately on a short pedicle. Supra orbital cirri slender, simple, and scarcely half the eye in height. Nuchal cirri slender, simple and less than half height of supra orbital cirrus, but always present. Forehead strongly projecting. Lips both smooth. Canines in lower jaw. Depth about 6. Head about 4.7. Spinous dorsal only a little lower than soft dorsal, a deep notch between the two, but last spine plainly visible. Membrane from last dorsal covering secondary caudal rays, but not reaching first principle ray. Longest pectoral ray shorter than head by length of snout. First anal rays of normal length and not specially modified.
