Size: 11 cm.

Color: Dark brown to light tan; dusky bands on body and upper lip; pale area behind eye followed by an irregular dark mark.

No crest in either sex. Nasal cirrus no longer than pupil, consisting of 5 to 7 slender filaments borne palmately on a short, stocky, pedicle. Supra orbital cirrus from 1 1/2 to 1 2/3 times eye diameter in length, increasing in length with age, and males with longer cirri than females, rod-like, tapering to fine point, 5 or 6 long, slender filaments on basal third of inner side, none on outer side. Nuchal cirri with 5 or 6 filaments, one or two of which may be bifurcate, on a very short stalk, never more than one stalk on either side of nape. Forehead evenly rounded and not projecting. Upper lip strongly crenulate from corner to corner. Posterior canine on dentary. Depth, 4.8 to 5.0. Head 3.7 to 4.4. Dorsal deeply notched, the last spine tiny and hidden in bottom of notch, last ray completely free from caudal. Longest pectoral ray shorter than head by length of snout. Anal spines and rays of male not modified, last ray free from caudal peduncle. Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14 - 16; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 15 - 17.

Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive.
