Description
Size: 75 cm.

Color: Dark above, silvery below. The upper emargination of the corselet, the point of which is blunt, and the area behind it to the caudal, bordered below by the lateral line brown, blue in life, with a number of dark oblique bands, forming loops, and less regular anteriorly. Three large brown blotches in a triangle on the lower emargination of the corselet, between pectorals and ventrals, not always distinct. Fins brownish.

Height 3.6-4, 3.9-4.8 in length with caudal. Head 3.2-3.4, 3.6-3.8 in length with caudal. Eye 5.7-6, 1.6 in snout and 1.7-1.8 in somewhat convex inter orbital space. Mouth oblique. Maxillary reaching to below middle of eye. A single series of slightly curved conical teeth in both jaws, those of the lower jaw stronger than those of the upper jaw. Minute teeth in a single row on the palatines and in an irregular double row on the tail of the vomer. Hind border of corselet formed by a line from base of second dorsal to behind tip of ventrals, but with a strong emargination on the back reaching to below 8th spine of first dorsal, bordered below by the lateral line, and another emargination reaching well before base of ventrals. The scales of the corselet are larger, better developed, and more or less rhombic on the back and above the pectorals. Below the pectorals the scales are thinner, and the border of the corselet is more indicated by the difference in smoothness of the skin than by the presence of scales. This area of the corselet is also produced posteriorly in a point above the ventrals. Laterals line scaled. Anterior dorsal spines almost as long as post orbital part of head; Following spines rapidly decreasing in length to the 8th, which equals half eye. Following spines sub equal, the last one minute. Second dorsal half length of its base behind first. Anterior rays longest, about half as longest spine of first dorsal, median rays shortest, hence the fin with a lunate edge. Origin of anal below end of second dorsal, to which it is similar. Pectorals equal to post orbital part of head. Ventrals shorter, equal to snout and eye. Lateral line almost straight, with a slightly curved downwards below second dorsal. Lateral keels on caudal peduncle well developed. About 24 gill rakers on lower branch of first arch, two thirds of length of corresponding gill filaments and about three fourths or less of length of eye.
