Description
Size: 40-92 mm

Color: Bluish brown, lower sides of head, chest and abdomen lighter or whitish. An indistinct brownish band from snout to the front border of eye sometimes present. Spinous dorsal and anal pale brownish. A black blotch at the bases of posterior rays of soft dorsal. Pectoral whitish. Ventral brownish, inner rays lighter.

Head 3.2-3.5 in standard length, 4.0-4.3 in total length. Depth of body 2.1-2.3 in standard length, 2.7-3.0 in total length. Eye diameter 3.0-3.5 in head, 0.8-1.0 in snout and equal to interorbital space. Two series of teeth in jaws. Preorbital and suborbital naked. Two rows of scales on preopercle, the inferior and posterior limbs naked. None of the opercles serrated. Pectoral fin half length of snout shorter than head. Ventral fin as long as head.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 13 (14); number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 12-13; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 17-18+8-9; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+9.
