Size: 12-96 mm.

Color: Variable. In life yellowish brown, lighter below. Scales of sides with azure, blue spots. A blue band from snout, through upper border of eye, along base of dorsal and terminating in a large black ocellus bordered by blue on the bases of the posterior dorsal spines and anterior rays. Another black blotch on the base of posterior rays extending on the body. These two blotches tend to unite in large specimens. In another variety, only the posterior blotch on base of hind rays of dorsal is present and the anterior part of body upto 6th or 7th dorsal spines is broadly lighter. A bluish line from upper lip to eye, sometimes continued posterior to eye or with some scattered blue spots posterior to eye. Dorsal brownish with dark edged. Anal pale to brownish. Caudal dusky. Pectoral pale yellowish. Ventral dusky, inner rays lighter.

Head 3.1-3.3 in standard length, 4.0-4.3 in total length. Depth of body 2.3-2.5 in standard length, 2.9-3.2 in total length. Eye diameter 2.9-3.3 in head, 0.7-0.8 in snout and about equal to convex interorbital space. None of the opercular bones serrated. Teeth in two rows in jaws. Pectoral fin shorter than ventral. Ventral fin with the first ray produced, equal to or shorter than head. Mouth somewhat oblique. Maxillary reaching to below front border of eye. Teeth rounded at tip, in two rows. Depth of preorbital twice or somewhat more than twice in eye. Preorbital not notched. Preorbital and suborbital scaleless. Three, posteriorly sometimes two, transverse scaleless. Three, posteriorly sometimes two, transverse rows of scales on preopercle, the inferior and posterior limbs broadly naked. Scales on upper part of head covering interorbital space, but not reaching to nostrils. dorsal spine slightly increasing in length posteriorly, the last one equal to snout and eye together. Membranes between the spines incised. 1 1/2 to 2 scales between lateral line and scaly sheath of dorsal below last spine. Soft dorsal rather pointed, the longest rays equal to head without snout or somewhat shorter. First anal spine less than half length of second, which is equal to or slightly longer than last dorsal spine. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal. Pectorals slightly shorter. Caudal slightly forked, the lobes rounded.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 12-14; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 12-13; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 15-16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 17-19+8-9; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+8-9.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
