Size: 20-105 mm.

Color: Dark brown, caudal peduncle and caudal pale. In life, light blue spots on head and upper sides of body. Dorsal dark brown, distal part of posterior rays pale. Anal dark brown. Ventrals blackish. Pectoral dusky, axil blackish.

Head 2.9-3.1 in standard length, 3.6-4.0 in total length. Depth of body 1.8-1.9 in standard length, 2.4-2.5 in total length. Eye diameter 3.2-3.3 in head, longer than snout and equal to interorbital space. Mouth somewhat oblique. A single row of somewhat truncate teeth in jaws. Three transverse rows of scales on preopercle, the inferior and posterior limbs scaled. Scales on head reaching anterior to nostrils. Preorbital and suborbital scaled. None of the opercular bones serrated. Pectoral fin almost equal to head. Ventral fin with the first ray produced, longer than pectoral fin. Maxillary reaching almost to below front border of eye. Teeth truncate or slightly emarginate. Preorbital not notched. Suborbital narrow, both bones with a row of scales. Three transverse rows of scales on preopercle, the inferior and the lower part of the posterior limb scaly. Scales on upper part of head reaching to tip of snout. Dorsal spines subequal or slightly increasing in length posteriorly, equal to postorbital part of head. Soft dorsal pointed, the longest ray almost as long as head without snout. Dorsal with a thick and high scaly sheath. First anal spine minute, second slightly longer than longest dorsal spine. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal, and with a thick scaly sheath. Caudal deeply forked.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XII, 16-17; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 13; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 18-19+2; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 3+1+9.
