Description
Size: 21-23 cm.

Color: Brownish, lighter below with 4-5 pale yellow cross bars below dorsal. A black saddle on caudal peduncle just behind dorsal. Pectoral hyaline with a black blotch superiorly at its base. Ventral dusky. Dorsal and anal brownish. Caudal brownish, pale posteriorly.

Head 2.7-2.9 in standard length, 3.7-4.0 in total length. Depth of body 1.7-1.9 in standard length, 2.3-2.5 in total length. Eye diameter 3.3-3.7 in head, 1.1-1.4 in snout and 1.0-1.3 in interorbital space. Mouth oblique, reaching to below nostril. Teeth in a single series in jaws, truncate. Posterior part of suborbital scales. Three rows of scales on preoperculum, flange naked. Ventral fin with the first ray produced, equal to head. Pectoral fin as long as ventral. None of the opercular bones serrated. Scales on upper part of head reaching to anterior part of inter orbital space, not reaching nostrils. First dorsal spine equal to eye, less than eye in young. Third and fourth dorsal spines generally longest, equal to snout and eye in young, half diameter of eye shorter in adults. Spines decreasing in size posteriorly, the last one equal to eye, in some specimens the posterior spine are only slightly shorter than the longest. Median dorsal rays longest, equal to snout and eye. First anal spine less than half length of second, which is equal to snout in adults, and one eye diameter longer in young ones. Soft anal similar yo soft dorsal. Ventrals with the first ray produced into a filament, sub equal to pectorals and almost as long as head. Caudal moderately forked, the lobes rounded. Four scales between lateral line and scaly sheath of dorsal below last spine.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 15; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 14-15; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 15-16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 20-21+8-9; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 4+1+12.
