Size: 39-363 mm

Color: Head brown, upper sides of body brownish, lower sides lighter. A dark brown spot below origin of lateral line, indistinct in large adults and a few indistinct scattered spots on upper sides of body. A reddish spot at upper edge of base of pectoral. In some juveniles a few indistinct dark spots on lower sides of head. Dorsal and anal pale, clouded dusky. Pectoral and ventral pale hyaline.

Head 2.7-3.0 in standard length, 3.4-3.8 in total length. Depth of body 3.10-3.25 in standard length, 3.8-4.0 in total length. Eye diameter 3.6-4.4 in head, 1.7-2.4 in snout and 0.90-1.25 in flat interorbital space. A swelling anterodorsal to eye, upper border of eye nearly in line with dorsal profile of head. Maxilla scarcely reaching vertical through anterior nostril. Hind nostril midway between tip of snout and hind border of head in large adults; nearer to tip of snout in juveniles. Pectoral fin slightly shorter than snout and eye, ventral fin shorter than pectoral by about ½ eye diameter. Third dorsal fin spine longer than others, about 1.4 diameter of eye. Second anal fin spine shorter, but stronger than third, it being nearly one eye diameter.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: X, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 47-48; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 4 ½ +1+15; gill raker count: 5+5-6.
