Description
Size: 65-160 mm

Color: Brownish above, lighter to yellowish below; a brown spot below lateral line above middle of pectoral and with indistinct brown vertical bars. Three narrow brown stripes from eye to maxillary. Dorsal grey with brownish markings. Anal and ventral grey. Pectoral yellowish.

Head 2.7-2.8 in standard length, 3.3-3.5 in total length. Depth of body 2.8-3.0 in standard length, 3.4-3.7 in total length. Eye diameter 3.4-3.8 in head, 1.5-1.9 in snout and 0.9-1.1 in somewhat flat interorbital space. Maxillary reaching almost to below anterior nostril. Hind nostril nearer to tip of snout than to hind edge of operculum. Lateral teeth in jaws conical, front canines moderate. Third or fourth dorsal fin spine longest, 1.3-1.5 eye diameter. Third anal fin spine somewhat longer than second spine, shorter than longest dorsal spines. Pectoral fin equal to or slightly longer than snout and eye together. Ventral fin half eye diameter shorter than pectoral fin.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: X, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 48-49; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 5 ½ +1+16-17.
