Color: Blackish brown on drying

Plant to 3.6 dm or somewhat more in height, often highly iridescent in water, attached by a large holdfast of compacted rhizoids. The blade at first broadly fan-shaped and even to 15 cm wide, with an irregularly growing margin and an attenuate base, soon variously cleft into cuneate or even strap-shaped segments 1-5 cm broad, the narrow bases of which become invested with rhizoids; blades transversely zonate at irregular intervals of about 3-15 mm, because of bands of colorless hairs. Sporangia in irregular sori bordering the hair zones.
