Size: 132-265 mm

Color: Uniform reddish brown; head and body excepting chest and abdomen and median fins with bluish spots edged darker. Dorsal and anal edged dusky. Pectoral pale with two or three spots basally. Ventral dusky, outer edge of first ray dark.

Head 2.5-2.7 in standard length, 3.1-3.3 in total length. Depth of body 2.8-3.0 in standard length, 3.5-3.7 in total length. Eye diameter 5.5-6.2 in head, 1.4-1.6 in snout and about 0.8-1.1 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching to below hind margin of eye or a little beyond. Teeth depressible in narrow bands, outer row of teeth strong and short, a pair of small canines in front of each jaw. Hind margin of preopercle finely serrated. Sixth or seventh dorsal fin spine longest, about twice eye diameter. Second anal fin spine little longer than third, equal to longest dorsal fin spine. Pectoral fin equal to postorbital part of head plus half eye diameter. Ventral fin shorter than pectoral fin by one eye diameter.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: IX, 15; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 9; number of rays in the pectoral fin: i, 17; number of spines and rays in the ventral fins: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 98-113; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 13-16+1+29-38.
