Size: 42-96 mm

Color: Pale brownish with reddish tinge above becoming lighter below, with small scattered dark spots on head and body. Basal two third of spinous dorsal reddish, outer portion pale; other fins pale. In another color variety the general ground color pale brownish with reddish tinge above becoming lighter below, but the dark spots on head and body less numerous than in the other variety and the sides of body with pale yellowish longitudinal bands along scale rows.

Head 2.8-3.0 in standard length, 3.4-3.6 in total length. Depth of body 2.8-3.1 in standard length, 3.4-3.7 in total length. Eye diameter 2.7-2.8 in head, 0.6 in snout and 0.7 in interorbital space. Nasalia without spines in front. Preorbital with a strong backwardly directed spine in front and smaller spines posteriorly. Opercular bones strongly serrated. Preopercular spine reaching to branchial opening. Pectoral fin equal to or slightly longer than ventral fin but shorter than head without snout.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XI, 13; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: IV, 9; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 13; number of spines and rays in the ventral fins: I, 7; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 43-45; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 3+1+8.
